Steam Engines at Weeting ..

Normally when I think about Steam Engines I see a locomotive, its whistle blowing, rumbling down the rail tracks with either flatcars for hauling or passenger cars hooked to it ...

But, when I attended the Weeting Steam Engine Rally I found myself surrounded by steam engines of a different type!  Here were steam engines used to power machinery, turn carousels; old steam engine trucks, engines pulling heavy wagon loads; the fire brigade and its steam engine pumper, and others ...

It was a wonderful place to visit.  The layer of coal smoke enshrouded the grounds carrying the smell.  Music from many steam engine powered organs and musical instruments followed a person from one end of the grounds to the other.  The smells from the candy and food vendors wafted across the fields, tantalizing you to come and feast.

Various steam engines at the show varied in size from small ...

To quite large ...

Of course since the engines use coal, and being at a show, the crews spent a good amount of time wiping and cleaning ...

But after a thorough cleaning, it was time to take in the rest of the show...

A large number of these different steam engines were rolled around the field.  An impressive sight to watch and hear, with whistles blowing, engine pistons chuffing, chains gently rattling as they turned ...

Over in another area of the grounds they demonstrated uses for which steam engines were built.  This covered from connected to threshers and cutters, to pulling heavy wagons and a steam engine crane lifting tree trunks ...

There was also an area, surrounded by a small scale steam engine railroad ride, devoted to the smaller models of steam engines .. exact working replicas of the ones trundling around out around in the fields.  A large pool allowed model boats to be shown also ...

All in all, it was a great day and one that I repeated at the many steam engine shows that are held.  :)
